Why My Heart Stays in Liverpool: A Weekend Guide to the City of Music and Magic
23 September 2026
From the salty air of the Mersey docks to the buzzing nightlife on Bold Street, here is how I spend a perfect three days in my favorite Northern city. Pack your most comfortable walking shoes and prepare to fall in love with the spirit of the Scousers.
There is something about Liverpool that just gets under your skin in the best way possible. I’ve visited countless cities, but few have that crackling energy that hits you the moment you step out of Lime Street Station. It’s a place where history, music, and a wicked sense of humor collide. If you are looking for a long weekend escape, let me take you through my personal itinerary for the perfect Liverpool getaway. Start your first morning at the Royal Albert Dock. Yes, it is touristy, but for a reason. I love grabbing a coffee and just wandering among the red-brick warehouses, watching the light bounce off the Mersey. Pop into the Tate Liverpool if you’re feeling artsy, or just soak in the maritime history. Once you’ve had your fill, head over to the Beatles Story. Even if you aren’t a die-hard fan, it is a fascinating dive into the cultural explosion that put this city on the global map. By lunchtime, you should definitely make your way up to Bold Street. This is the heartbeat of the independent scene. Skip the big chains and duck into Leaf for a pot of tea and a bite to eat. It is incredibly cozy, and the people-watching is top-tier. I usually spend an hour or two browsing the independent record stores and vintage shops nearby. Saturday is for the icons. You cannot come to Liverpool without visiting the two cathedrals. The walk between them, aptly named Hope Street, is one of my favorite strolls in the country. The Anglican Cathedral is gargantuan and genuinely took my breath away the first time I walked through the doors. Afterward, wander down to the Philharmonic Dining Rooms. It is officially the most beautiful pub in England, and you haven’t truly seen Liverpool until you’ve had a pint in their ornate, Victorian-tiled restrooms. Yes, you read that right. Treat yourself to a nice dinner in the Baltic Triangle. This area used to be gritty industrial warehouses, but now it is a hub of street food, craft beer, and creative studios. I always head to the Baltic Market—the options are endless, and the vibe is always electric. Sundays in Liverpool are for relaxing. I love heading to Crosby Beach to see Antony Gormley’s 'Another Place.' Watching those iron statues stand against the tide as the sunset hits the water is a deeply moving experience that stays with you long after you leave. If you have time before your train, grab a 'Scouse'—the local stew—at a traditional pub. It is hearty, warming, and the ultimate comfort food. The secret to enjoying Liverpool is to lean into the pace. Don’t rush. Talk to the locals; Scousers are notoriously friendly and will tell you exactly where the best music is happening that night. Whether it is a tiny pub with an acoustic singer or a massive venue on Mathew Street, you will find a soundtrack to your weekend. Liverpool isn't just a destination; it is a feeling. It’s loud, it’s proud, and it is undeniably welcoming. So, book the train ticket. I promise you, you’ll be planning your next trip back before you’ve even made it home.
