Beyond the Bee: Hidden Gems for Your Next Manchester Day Trip
20 August 2026
Tired of the same old haunts? I’ve rounded up a few underrated spots just a short train ride from Manchester that offer the perfect escape from the city bustle.
Living in Manchester, we are spoiled for choice. I love our city’s gritty, creative soul, but sometimes, the concrete gets a bit much and I just need to hear birds chirping instead of tram bells. We all know the usual suspects like the Lake District or the Peak District, but lately, I’ve been craving something a little different. Here are three spots that have completely stolen my heart lately. First up is Hebden Bridge. You have probably heard the name, but have you actually spent a full day there? It feels like stepping into a bohemian dream tucked deep within a valley. I took the Northern train from Victoria last month and within an hour, I was wandering through the most incredible independent bookshops and cafes. My pro tip: skip the main street for lunch and head to the canal path. There is a tiny little bakery near the marina that does a lemon drizzle cake that I still dream about. It’s got that relaxed, artistic vibe that makes you feel like you could just pack up your life and move there tomorrow. Then there is the village of Haworth. Yes, it’s famous for the Brontë sisters, but you don't need to be a literature nerd to fall in love with the steep, cobbled streets. It feels like time has stood still. Walking up the main street is a serious workout for your calves—take note and wear sensible shoes! Once you reach the top, the views over the moorland are absolutely sweeping. I love grabbing a coffee and just sitting on a stone wall watching the clouds roll over the hills. It is incredibly moody and atmospheric, especially on a grey day. It is the perfect place to reset your headspace. Finally, if you want something a bit more coastal without the drive all the way to Blackpool, head to Lytham St Annes. It is so much quieter and refined compared to its boisterous neighbor. I spent a Saturday there recently just walking along the Victorian pier and eating an ice cream while looking out at the Irish Sea. It feels like a proper, old-school British day out. Check the tide times before you go; when the tide is out, the beach is vast and flat, which is perfect for a long, windy walk to clear out the cobwebs. I find that these trips don’t just get me out of the city; they help me see home with fresh eyes when I return. We are so lucky to have such diverse landscapes within a quick train ride. So, pack a small bag, leave the laptop at home, and go explore these spots before the rest of the world finds out how great they are. Trust me, your weekend self will thank you for the change of scenery.
